Round about a month ago - maybe you remember? - I cracked. I couldn't go on. The Granny Squares were getting to me and I'd reached a low crochet moment, wrapped up amongst all that red and cream and endless finishing off and starting again. As a remedy there was, I decided, only one way to go. Large. One large Granny Square. One blanket. Many, many rounds of simple, satisfying, fast hooking, without any fiddle. I'd make a blanket for Little E.
And now it's finished:
When I posted that I'd made a start, someone called it an "under the stars" blanket. Isn't that perfect? I'd like to think that Little E might indeed drag it outside and lie on his back in the grass and look at the sky. I hope he likes it. I did think carefully about choices for a boy:
Not too big, not too small. He needs to be able to haul it about for adventures, maybe pack it in a bag. But it needs to be big enough to keep a growing boy warm for years to come.
Not too bright, not too dull. Grey and blue for his bedroom. But bright green and red for his personality.
And, above all, not a blanket for girls. That meant no pompom edging (one of these days I'll get to try it!). Instead, something simple
All worked in Stylecraft Special DK in Grey, Silver, Denim, Lime, Matador, Midnight and Graphite.
An under the stars blanket, for a boy who is under the weather just at the minute. Get Well Soon, Little E! We don't want you sick when you turn six.
ps: I finished this while watching Tiny House Nation last night. Tiny Houses! I want one!

It's gorgeous Sian, if I'm allowed to say that about a boy blanket! I'm quite sure it will be loved for very many years.

I'll get back to crochet one of this days, I'm just too obsessed with knitting right now I guess!
So lovely - you are clever! As a colour lover I'm tickled that his 'under the stars' blanket includes a shade called 'Midnight'.
And - no wonder you're under the influence of blue + grey [as your comment on my blog mentioned!]. You've been surround by it! xx
The blanket is lovely. Well done Sian and get well soon Little E!
It looks perfect for him and his adventures.
Oh Sian, well done you that you finished it so quickly!! It's absolutely lovely! Love your description of it: I can just imagine him dragging it along behind him as he struts outside on any one of many little boy's adventures. Beautiful. You've warmed my heart and made me smile. Thank you!
it's lovely Sian and i'm sure he'll treasure it too x
What a beautiful gift for Little E. I'm sure he will enjoy it for years to come. Get well soon Little E. !
It turned out wonderfully and I'm sure Litte E will love it! My Mom used to make granny square afghans all the time, usually lap warmer size. I still have the one she made while I was in high school in denim and sparkly white. I took it with me to college and brought it with me into my marriage. Although it hasn't been used in years, it brings me a lot of comfort knowing I still have a little piece of her here with me.
P.S. Mom always just finished off her last row when she felt the afghan was big enough (or ran out of yarn?). She never added edging.
Beautifully styled as well as crocheted, Sian. I am sure it will be A Big Hit. Hoping Little E is netter soon - he can snuggle underneath it if not :). Tiny house? My dream too. I want to move into the summerhouse at the bottom of the garden.
What a beautiful blanket I am sure Little E will love it and I hope he is better soon x
That blanket is sure to cheer him up. I see it being cuddled to sleep and the makings of an excellent den!
