Sian Scrapbooking Sport

Sian scrapbooking sport? Hardly ever happens. Last time I made a sports page it was less about the rugby and more about the bacon sandwich at half time. But maybe that's not the whole story, because I do actually watch - and enjoy - several different sports. It wasn't always like this. Any kind of sporting television used to bore me almost to tears, bring me out in a rash, have me running for a book. ...

I can date my sporting conversion to the day. It was 1994 and after a hard week in the library, dreaming about babies when I wasn't shelving books (because that's what I did in those days), I sat down to relax with a bit of TV. Just by chance I caught the news, sad news it was, about the death of a Formula One driver in a Saturday practice session. I watched, I watched a bit more, next day I watched the race - the one everyone remembers as Ayrton Senna's last. I was hooked.

From High In The Sky Toys For Boys

Everyone agreed it was funny: Sian watching sport. But they could sense there was even more entertainment to come. A few weeks later the World Cup began. I was glued to it from the start. We went to London for a wedding. I watched. We went out sight seeing. I watched in between trips. I turned on the TV as soon as we got back to the hotel. We went back home...

...and I discovered I was having that baby I'd been dreaming about. The sports watching continued and when that baby was born - well, you know the rest. A boy. Of course. We should have guessed.

From the minute he could sit himself up in front of the TV he has been a Grand Prix addict. We watched together and when I was expecting his little sister, in the days of video tapes, recorded races kept him happy while I rested. The first thing we did together after we'd brought the baby home from the hospital was set up the big set of track and cars his new sister had given him. We read the magazines together, we each had Easter eggs one year with racing cars inside..

...and at this point in my layout making I realised that I had more than one story to tell. There are lots of pages I could put together about The Boy Who Brought Me To Sport. So today, even if you aren't a Formula One fan, maybe you can give me some pointers on what you do when you want to go back and add more. I made room on this page for the journaling by creating a washi tape flap for my photo; but now I realise that if I go right back through our old photo albums I'll find more.

And I haven't even started on the story of the football sticker albums. Yet. What would you do?

When we were first married, we went several years to Watkins Glen to watch the Formula One races. It was a camping adventure, and one very dirty, dusty experience, but lots of fun!

Another super page, Sian - I should have guessed from your recent page on the cycle race that you had a sporty side. No, I am afraid mine is totally absent. I like your solution, with the flap .. Though if it's whole pages, I'd just pop one into the relevant album. Or just add it to the current one. Or remove the original and start a whole new themed album. Actually, I'm really not sure, and therefore probably not much help!

Wow - so much here! Did I ever tell you that my first college boyfriend wanted to be a race car driver? He started me on my interest in the sport. We used to work local SCCA races, and we went down to the Long Beach Grand Prix. I used to love watching on TV, too.
And, then, I have so much too say about how sport connects me to my kids. I know I blog about it all the time, but it is the easiest and deepest connection we feel.

There were lots of things I was going to say, until I spied the grey striped washi tape on your page. There is a piece of the same on the beautiful card you sent me and now I am just smiling to myself.

I always love your attention to detail. You have a knack for cluttering embellishments. I like the ink drops too. I need to remember to do that more often.

I really enjoyed reading this Sian, and finding out how you came to love sport. Sometimes we have to be in the right moment to recognise something that has passed us by. How lovely that you and your son enjoy this together. I loved that you each had Easter eggs with a car inside!

I've never been a sports watcher but I can't deny the allure of the Olympics, Aas for adding more, I never dom s page us done as soon as I put it in the album. How about journalling on the back, or creating a facing page with more writing?

Not much sports watching goes on here - although the soundtrack to my childhood Saturdays was Grandstand - however hubby is a big formula 1 fan.

I grew up in a house that was sports, sports, sports. My Dad was a huge Fulham fan, and loved boxing too ... My mum was another sports fan but of hockey, athletics and tennis ... Me! Nothing. Can't stand it lol

I love this post! It's made me think of so many different connections ~ my love of Wimbledon from my dad, rapidly learning about football in order to be able to converse with The Boy Child and, more abstractly, watching TBC dancing today to "I Like to Move It!" and remembering something from 20 years ago in a flash.
Thanks!

isn't it funny how our children bring us to sport. I never thought in a million years i would be a rugby mum. I always enjoyed watching the game (or maybe it was the men) with my dad..but never thought it would become such a huge part of my life.

The grand prix is my least favourite sport..i fall alseep every time! Your page is fab....I am always trying to find ways to add more journalling to my rugby pages. I find the pocket pages a good way.. i can just tuck in any extra bits x x

I'm a real fan, watched it since 1992 when my Dad died and I needed to go to the Grand Prix at Silverstone to keep my brother company. Picked an unknown driver called Shumacher to support as he was the same age as me. Rest as they say is history. I remember the day Senna died so clearly I was decorating our new house by myself with the TV on, it was a lovely sunny day. Great post. Brought back some memories thank you x

First of all i enjoyed discovering this side of you! Secondly, I have never written a page with as much journaling as you have here and have never really had a problem of too much writting to fit on a page :) Third, you have to read "The Art of Racing in the Rain" if you haven't yet! Last but not least, your page looks fabulous with that big pop of red!

I've been a Rally (and also now Rallycross) fan for many years now, and recently returned from a Top Gear event that featured Lewis Hamilton, so I had to chime in and say I LOVE THIS page.

I have tons of race photos, but it's a harder thing to scrapbook for me for some reason...I love that this isn't overly "sportsy" looking. I get in a rut of thinking that those photos need to look super gritty or masculine, when that's not really my style.

Just work with those other sports photos and stories as you see fit, I can never force it to all come together at once!

I really like seeing a large visible chunk of journaling on your page Sian :)

I like the visible background with the photo in front. Don't do sports so haven't really scrapped any. My trick for getting even more story in? Trimming the page down slightly, mounting on another background piece and making it a pocket. I've slipped in A4 sheets that way. I've also stuck the journaling on the back with a note on the front pointing that out. Usually for more details.

I think that the sport and TTO deserve a whole album of their own. No other way to do it. Doesnt have to be completed all in one go but just do a page every now and then, when you've got nothing else to do... Sorry, I tried not to laugh when I wrote that, honestly. It's just the thought of you with time to spare that makes me chuckle.

Hate sport. That's what I've got a hubby for [to love it - nice balance, then!]....looks like you need a 'double'...mimicking this one would look way cool - but with different photos & stories of course...but do the same writing & flap idea....luckily I don't have sport stories. Oh, woops. Just remembered, the Grand Boy started soccer last week. I snaffled the FB photos. He's TWO..now, there's a story.......!!!

Love hearing how you got into sport,Sian....I'm afraid my 'sport gene' is almost entirely missing [I think that applies to my whole family actually]...I did become enthused by the London Olympics....and may watch England lose some World Cup matches....but that's about it....OH loves the motor racing....and that's the only sport he ever watches.

Fantastic page - I like how you added the photo with washi tape. I'd add a divided page protector to put in more photos & possibly other journaling cards. Then I'd start another great layout about those football stickers .... :>)

That is a lovely story. It sounds like you could do a whole mini album on sporting stories :)

Great page with a wonderful story! I'm not a sports fan. I can deal with football (american) but that is about it. I cope with baseball but that's as good as it gets - coping. Not enjoying. Never found a sport I can really enjoy.

I really love the visible journalling on this page, the whole page is really beautiful.
Motor Racing/ Grand Prix/ Tour de France & Rugby interest me but I'm not as hooked as my boys!

Trying again - I keep bumped out just as I hit publish. Here goes - That's a really great looking layout Sian. You're right I wouldn't have guessed of your love for sports. I seem to have gone the opposite way and hardly watch sports now at all.

Love this layout. I rarely (if ever) scrap sport but with a little boy may start more.

I'm not a sport loving person in general but can happily sit in front of the tv and watch the big events if someone's put it on :-)
But even I could make up a few sporty layouts - in fact I made one recently.
As for going back bad adding more, how about 6x12 additional pages. I use those more and more when I have a lot to say. I just make sure that extra sheet has some similar colours, papers or elements to tie it in. Looking forward to seeing what solution you come up with.

This is a great read. Makes me want to scrap about my brief span as a basketball watcher - and yes, of course, there was a boy involved.

Like many others I suspect, I would put in another page next to it, maybe with just journalling and a few pretty bits but maybe with another small photo if it fitted.
