I Haiku: Do You?

I love it when I click on a post and straight away think Ooh, I could do something with that. Thanks! Take Rinda's post about haiku, for example. A challenge: a photo and haiku and I thought I would give it a go.

The photo was the easy part - I've been trying out the new close up lens my sister bought me for my birthday (thanks, sis!) and I like this one:

The haiku, a little harder. Actually, I think I made it hard for myself - I kept imagining my brother (the Literature Professor. Looks like it's family day here today) shaking his head sadly. He wears a cord sports jacket and drives a volvo, does an East Coast thing..but I'm losing my focus..

Back to the haiku. There's that rule about the syllables, then there's the contrast you need to create between the first and the second parts, and the focus on the senses..The more I thought about it, the more I thought - what a way to journal! Lots of layouts with the story caught in three lines. It might not be easy; but I bet it's effective.

Ah, cool yellow rose
wrapped around morning rain
summer slips away

Cool Haiku Sian! I don't think I've done Haiku since High School!!! Good idea about using it for journalling though. I might give that a try.

:-) nice haiku - love the air of sadness in it. poetry's been out of my life for a couple of years... time to bring it back in I think!

Beautiful haiku Sian, love the way you've said 'wrapped around morning rain', rather than the rain covering the flower and being more dominant.

I saw this post of Rinda's too and have been mulling it over, but I'm finding the photo part of it difficult as haven't been snapping that much lately. Guess I should just photograph something around the house and go for it...

Well, Sian, your haiku is lovely. I am tempted to follow Rinda's lead on this post idea too...I suppose I'll start by choosing a photo and then work on the poem part. Like you, it's the part that intimidates me the most. :o) xo

Sian,
What a lovely haiku! I guess I've always just focused on the syllable part without realizing there are other parameters. I guess it comes from not having a sophisticated brother (LOL). Yours is incredible though!

I love how you've captured the essence of Haiku just by looking at that stunning photo. I must confess that haiku is a bit beyond me, though.

Nice Haiku and the picture is beautiful! Funny we were just talking about Haiku's here - my 9 saying she found them hard and I was saying I almost felt like it was a free pass when they were our homework, lol.

I have heard of haiku, Sian, but I've never had a go! Thanks for the link to Rinda's blog & challenge...I may just have to have a go at this one too! I love your rose photo & your Haiku is it's perfect accompaniment...methinks this could well be a fab way to journal too!
