Memorandum Monday: Chicken Nuggets and a Wardrobe

Aha. Monday! There you are: the light at the end of the Ikea tunnel. Mmm..maybe that's two empty boxes and an allen key away from being unfair. I like Ikea as much as everyone else in the family and this morning I have the aching muscles to prove it. So I'm not going to insult you by trying to pass off a visit to blue and yellow heaven as - you know, something new I did at the weekend. We went last week. We went this week. We bought the things we'd been talking about for the seven days in between.

We took our girl and the friend who will also be moving in...

and there you have it: there's the new thing, right there. I've never before taken prospective tenants with me to Ikea . They seemed to enjoy it. They had enough energy left at the end for the standard who's-going-to-push-the-trolley-round-the-warehouse argument; and so by the time we got home, we were in such high spirits we sent them to the chip shop to find dinner.

"Thanks for the nuggets and the wardrobe, shouted Tenant No 2 as she left later. Maybe this landlady has discovered a new USP?

Yesterday it was back to the real work. I was on curtain hemming duty, which was no hardship. I'd found beautiful linen curtains (called Aina) in Ikea, for less than I'd pay for the fabric, so all I had to do was shorten them. Which left me with four lovely pieces of natural linen to do with what I like, once I've finished up a couple more knitting projects.

A little autumn man sock action until my new yarn arrives

If you caught Saturday's post, you'll have seen my first ever finished colourwork yoke sweater. Next? A poke-hat, by special request. I haven't knitted a poke-hat before. It's a hat which looks like a pokeball, for a head which looks very like the one belonging to that nephew of mine, Little E. I can start as soon as the yarn arrives. Which reminds me: something I learned? I'll pass it on in case it helps any knitters out there. If you are trying to substitute the yarn in a pattern for something else you have, take a look at yarnsub.com for suggestions based on similar gauge, fibre content and you can search by price too. It doesn't have a special section for poke-yarn, though, I worked that one out by myself. Til next time, have a good week!

Last week  Alexandra, Helena, Eileen, Mitra, Mary-Lou, Ladkyis, Maggie, Fiona, KraftyKaren and Deb made a memo on Monday. Go on, give 'em a wave! And maybe think about joining us?

Ah, IKEA! The closest one to us is outside Toronto, Canada so we rarely make a trip. If we're traveling, however, and I see that one is on the way, we almost always do a run-through. The one closest to Sarah's is a bit of a drive as well, so we've only been twice---much closer than the one in Canada, however. I remember well all the preparation for new abodes, though neither of my children were living nearby, nor in a house. I actually loved the whole process. Sounds like fun to me!

a trip to the "Géant suédois" as we call IKEA in French can be fun but always implies so much work!
I always enjoy their kitchen accessories, mirrors, frames and plants the most!
and often can "bribe" DH with a stop at the Cafeteria ;)
Your nephew is lucky! I can't wait to see more about the hat!
Thanks Sian~

IT must be getting close now! We have a spare room full of stuff. It keeps growing after conversations such as " you better have one of those hanging thingies to dry your smalls" ...

When you read my post you will see I had an Ikea weekend as well! I do like your latest knitting projects, I love knitting fair isle although a challenge at times. Well done with your sweater.

A poke-hat eh? Can't wait to see a picture of Little E modelling that !
Funnily enough, last time I went to IKEA was when we were getting all the essentials for when Jon went off to Uni. 8 years ago! Sounds like we're overdue a visit.

I must be the only person in the land never to have been to Ikea!

Nope, Jane I haven't been either...but I have seen their stuff on line! Someday, drive by them all the time, just don't have one local! Lovely weekend it sounds like! A lot of wrenching, which is always good in my book!

I'm feeling freakish because I have never been to IKEA, although I have been known to peruse their catalogue ...

No Ikea near us either Jane....so never had the pleasure. I'm figuring it's saved me a lot of money over the years! Lovely to have your girl and her mate settled like that..... so NICE that you can have her still close by. WONDERFUL!!

LOL about "blue and yellow heaven". I don't think that Rob would agree on the name... maybe hell. ;) Sounds like you have been having lots of fun and you seem like an amazing landlady to have. Looking forward to seeing Little E's hat. :)

I had been wondering if there would be a roommate (or is flatmate the proper term) in the picture - and know I now. Us parents know that a good college roommate can be almost comforting to the parents as to the student - although that probably never occurs to the student. Just as well. And now I also know what Little E has been up to - so you'd better get on that assignment too. Have a great (albeit busy) week, Sian.

I'm an IKEA fan, so I think "blue and yellow heaven" is an apt description. I have no idea what a poke hat is so I'll wait for the photos!

Mmm, those linen pieces look full of promise. - what a good deal! I am admiring your IKEA stamina. Two young ladies have a lot to be grateful for :).

Sounds like another busy weekend! It's nice to see Little E's name mentioned, we don't seem to have seen or heard from him for ages and I do miss his words of wisdom :)

Making the rounds late . . . obviously! LOL So FUN that everything is coming together for the new tenants!

I'm always amused/intrigued by the various shopping groups in IKEA. There always seem to be uni shoppers at this time of year.

Oh nice to see the linen remains - look forward to seeing what you'll do with it. I've got linen pieces planned for cushion covers with embroidered accents sitting on my project to do list.
