If you've been dropping by here for long, you'll probably have guessed by now that I'm not much of an "in the moment" scrapbooker. Most of the pages I make only come together after the story has settled. Could be years, might be months; but if you sit on a spider on Saturday here ( say, just plucking a wild possibility out of the ether), you probably won't be scrapbooked on Sunday.
So when Get It Scrapped wanted to do a piece on scrapbooking entertaining ephemera I decided to go back a bit, to the night of the Olympic Opening Ceremony, in London, in 2012.
We weren't in London, though, we were at home, planning a going away meal. For, after a year at home, Uncle Dave was bound to return to his job in the States; and we had one family of friends in particular we wanted to gather together to see him off in style. We hadn't realised it was Olympic night, my friend and I, when we plotted Dave's Dinner. As soon as I knew I said - Are you sure you still want to bring everyone round? What about watching the ceremony? And she said - Sian, we are talking about two of the least sporty families on the planet. Let's eat.
So we did. And you know what happened? Of course you do. We turned on the TV, we gathered round and we soon began to realise that we were watching a big, big moment. We were captivated. We looked at each other in amazement: this show, the one everyone had been talking about for so long was finally here and we were watching it and we were all together and we'd be able to remember it for the rest of our lives.
And now I finally got round to scrapbooking it with a copy of my shopping list for the meal that night. You'll find more ideas over at Get It Scrapped's Ideas for including memorabilia on Layouts About Entertaining...
...which leads me nicely to ...the Blog Hop winner. Thank you to everyone who dropped by and left a comment. The names went in a hat and I pulled out...

I try to ignore the decorations in shops and the ads on TV as they spring up the
minute Halloween is over and I am always Mrs Bah Humbug about that. The first
sign for me is when I start making the first of many batches of mince pies for
the freezer - I usually start the first weekend in December, so the first sign
is still a little way off for me!!
Karen, I have your email and I'll be in touch any minute now! Well done. I hope you enjoy your prize. Maybe I'll see you in class?
and see the rest of you again very soon?

It sounds like Uncle Dave had an even more special off! Great page x
Congratulations to Krafty Karen.
Sounds like a great night, Wookie & I watched it on iplayer together was indeed an event.
What a well told story Sian. I got goose flesh reading about you realizing the magnitude of the moment. It's hard to anticipate what will stick in our brains for the rest of our lives.

Lovely story, I got goose bumps too :-)
I just love this story,Sian....it reminds me so much of our own feelings as a totally unsporty family who had no intention of watching the Olympics....and then we watched that ceremony in awe....and they had us from there on.
I was exactly the same except that luckily my friend suggested going to see the opening ceremony at Leeds m Millenium square on a big screen. So only were we amazed by the spectacle but also by the community feel of all watching the event together.
What a great story and another fantastic layout. I love the use of the notebook page amongst the other lovely embellishments!
I still have to scrap the olympics...so you are way ahead. A super story for a super page x
Fantastic layout, you have given me such good ideas for how I go back and record it some more, I have scrapped all the photos and some of the feelings but there is lots more I want to capture. Great way in to doing it. I keep all of my to-do lists (as you do) as a a journal of sorts and I am sure they will help to scrap.
It was an amazing event, I hoped it would be good, I think we were all taken a little aback at how good. I feel like one of the luckiest people around at getting the chance to go to the dress rehearsal a couple of nights before and I will never ever forget the feelings I experienced.
Great post, oh and of course, great layout.
Oh this has reminded me of sitting with my lovely girl watching the Olympic ceremony and gasping in awe at the splendor and inventiveness of it.
I have to laugh, I come from an extremely sporty family and TE is the exact opposite ... as it turns out though, that is one thing that is good about the Olympics, and especially a home olympics - they really do seem to bring people together.
My parents and one of my sisters were staying at a little B&B in Ireland when the Sydney opening was on ... they had some great stories to tell!
I think the important piece you left out here is how wonderful your memory is for all the bits and pieces of things that happened in the past!!! I'd be in a state trying to remember the shopping list from two years ago! Love the banners!
I love the look of this page and how even with no photo, it manages to tell two stories! I am terrible at entertaining and probably even worse at including entertaining memorabilia! :P
Do you know I haven't scrapped any of the Olympics or the Jubilee year as yet! I seem to have been on a bit of a hiatus of scrapping anything other than Featherdown Farm because its easy to carry around. MUST DO BETTER... ;-)
Your story made me laugh because we were very similar. We aren't really sporty but got totally caught up in the olympics and the moment of it all. It was wonderful. Thank you for reminding me of those happy memories!
Wow thank you so much - really looking forward to doing the class xxx
I just love the stories that you capture with your layouts and without using photographs - wonderful x
Congratulations KraftyKaren.
Sian I love this so much, not only a beautiful LO, a great story but that is exactly what happened to us when we switched on the TV to realise the enormity and the spectacle of it all...thanks for the lovely memory.
Sounds like it was an extra special send off - one that you will all remember.
