Red Noses All Round

Oh, the best laid plans! maybe this post needs to be re-named Red Faces. See, I had a plan. It just didn't quite work out.

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the very first Red Nose Day here in the UK.  It's a fundraiser which needs no explaining at all if you live here, but which can't be put into words if you are anywhere else. It works, though. It raises millions.

Page with hidden journaling by Sian from From High in the Sky

I remember the first one: and I know I have a picture somewhere. me wearing that first red nose - hard, plastic, silly. We put them on and walked all the way into town. In pain, because that plastic hurt. But it was better than going to lectures on a Friday afternoon. We took a photo: I'm wearing an 80's sweater, in front of some 80's curtains in an 80's flat with a tiny portable tv. And I've looked everywhere and it has disappeared. The photo, not the tv, which blew up not long after.

So, I've had to leave a space for it on my layout: underneath another flap! Same idea as before, with the journaling under the flap and a cut out "2" this time to lead the way. A comment on my Wednesday page got me thinking about this. The cut out solved the worry about the next generation not knowing to look for more, it noted. And I think that's right...but it did stop me in my tracks, because I have always assumed that any family of mine who look at my albums will be just as inquisitive (nosy, Sian, you mean nosy) as I am. I've always been  pretty sure they'll know where to look (so thanks Chipper, for getting me to think right round the subject!).  When I say the word "scrapbook", what it conjures up for me is an old-style book: one with pages falling out, with cuttings and postcards and bits stuffed in, with flaps to open and glued in birthday cards..a rainy afternoon find to lose yourself in. Full immersion scrapbooking I think maybe you could call it. With an engaged reader who wants to explore every inch. I guess that's why I decorate my pages too: in the hope that someone will say "There's a bit of my old party dress" or "she used some of this year's wrapping paper on this one". If they want to pull out the page and stroke a bit of lace on it, all the better. A scrapbook always starts with scraps..

..so on this layout I have included the little Red Nose Day leaflet, which can be pulled out to reveal some jokes. It came with this year's nose. And I'm only realising now that a better photo might have been a line of  noses. We have quite a collection built up over the years..foam ones, bendy ones, ones to decorate. But that's all in my journaling; and I do have some extra space. I guess I could go back and add another picture. If I can round up the noses. I have a funny feeling some of them went into school today and may never be seen again.

If you are planning on having some Red Nose Day fun today..have a good one!

what a great idea for a layout, I hope you find that photo and let us all have a look!!

yes I remember how painful those first noses were - and how new and exciting it all felt

on hidden journaling needing a visitble clue - it has always been one of my issues with page protectors - when I 1st scrapped I wanted to punch holes in my card rather than put them into plastic so that readers would have easy access to flaps etc

Ah red nose day! I love your layout about this Sian! I remember being very little and going into the supermarket. My mum bought me a red nose and I was so proud of it! The next day we all had to go into school wearing something red. I wore bright red tights and my new red nose! Hope you have a lovely red nose day!

As someone who has never heard of red nose day, I'm curious. I think I need a group photo...

Oh... loving that layout Sian! I think people who appreciate what we do will be inquisitive and linger to explore pages and pockets.

I love the LO.
You have inspired me to jot down a few notes about Red Nose day now...I remember those first noses. I loved them (but not as much as the ones on the cars!!) but couldn't wear them for long as they 'cut the nose' off me!!

See, that's one of the cool things about blogging. I've heard of red nose day in the past few years from blogs I follow, but I had no idea that it was a fundraiser of sorts. Hm.

Too bad Carrie and I didn't plan our trip a little earlier so we could have participated in this fun event.

Can't believe it's 25 years. Hope you find the photo

I've heard of people marking their page protector corner with a gold dot to imply further exploring would reveal hidden treasures ... also of people cutting slits & holes in their page protectors (but that requires my album to be "finished" and I'm not sure mine will ever be that) ... so I just make my hidden stuff accessible from the top opening.

Lovely page - you are certainly making great use of your Slice for interesting cut-outs.

I remember those first noses as well....definately painful....I love the rubber ones with feet we saw in Sainsbury's today....along with the red 'gunking in the bath' they were doing to raise money!!
I still can't believe it's been going for 25 years.

The one downside of digital scrapping is you can't hide stuff. It's either there or it isn't.

I've heard of red nose day but I only know it has something to do with comic relief.

It is 15 years since I ahve lived in UK but it is great to see it is still held and supported. I loved the noses that you put on the front of your car, they were a hit the first time

Pretty page although I am still unclear about where the photo will be. I do hope you find it, so then we can all see, and I'll understand where it is hidden on the page.

We have Red Nose Day here too - but it isn't as big as what it sounds to be in the UK - our big fundraising day is always Good Friday when we have the Royal Children's Hospital appeal - that's the one where millions and millions are raised.

I love that you have a collection of noses from throughout the years.

Dude! I have to have a little google and then a little peek at the link you had and then a bit more poking around. WHICH brings to the conclusion that YOU guys have more fun there! Sounds amazing to raise so much money but have it be a happy time, even better! Most corporations here encourage their employees to give through the United Way, but nobody wears a red nose! I love your journaling idea and your peek under it! Super cool!

Another great layout & I enjoyed reading your thoughts on the hidden journaling & full immersion scrapbooking!

I love your style of scrapbooking. There is always something else to go back and look at. I also really like your previous posts especially the one about the NSSO and the things that make her her. I am definitely going to have to make one along those lines.

Love the Lo Sian x
I hope you find the photo you were looking for, it can be so irritating when you were sure you knew where it was!!

I have no idea what a red-nose day is. Sounds like you go to some sort of comedy routine wearing your red noses. Would love to see the journaling on your page to get "the rest of the story."

Such a glorious page! Lots to look at and enjoy and plenty of information and story for the next generation of readers too. You are brave letting them take those red noses into school! Oh, yes, that first year the noses really were like golf-balls. Remember the ones you tied onto cars? Happy days :).

Can't believe Red Nose Day is 25! WOW! I am happy that I made you think from another angle. :-) If something was 'mine', I would be the nosey kind too ... but if it belonged to someone else, I wouldn't go poking around ... if you know what I mean.

There are so many details on this page and yet it looks very balanced, like everything is where it is meant to be. I hope you had a tremendous day :-)

Another beautiful LO. Am going to have to borrow your idea of the little fold out bit - great for us journalers! Had to laugh at your comment about the plastic noses - I remember, very vividly, how much they used to hurt!

This is my first introduction to Red Nose Day. Just one of the many things I love about being part of an international blogging community!

Fab idea :) how do you attach the flap?

Those car noses were so funny! A touch of genius.

If I can find some more noses, I'll take a group picture. There was a great one with hair and gel to style it with one year.

I stick the flap on with double sided sticky tape - the extra strong red stuff. But I think sewing it would be nice too

Such a good idea to celebrate a milestone like this :)

What an interesting fundraiser. I had never heard of Red Nose day but it makes sense! It's all good to me especially if it becomes a memory on a scrapbooking page... Your words on that subject really resonate with me and make me wonder how far I have gone for the "true" meaning of scrapbooking in what I do... Lots to ponder....

That's a great layout. I was only telling my daughter the other day just how lucky she was with the noses now because the ones we had meant you were lucky to have a real nose by the end of the day because the sides of the plastic ones were so sharp! :)

Carmen said...

Although - the foam ones are more comfortable, Pheebs let Ruby play with hers and with 5 minutes it was split. So what's better a bit of discomfort but durability or comfort but easily broken noses. (Ouch! *g*) What a great page Sian - I often wonder how you store your pages as I agree - that's what scrapbooks should be about, totally interactive like that but do you put them in the plastic sleeves?

This year was the first we didn't do anything re Red Nose Day :( Hmm interesting - it just capitalised those three words automatically. I like the idea of people interacting with the pages and poking around, there isn't much hidden on mine but there are a few surprises.
