The Man Sweater - My Monthly Make

"Uncle Dave warned me about mothers like you," said The Tall One, as he eyed my knitting book with suspicion. "He said once you start talking about leaving home, they start talking about thermal underwear and woolly sweaters."

Which was harsh. I thought. Harsh. But also true..maybe he does need me to start now? if I knitted all winter, and right through the spring, I could have a whole woolly wardrobe ready for next September. Mmm..

After all, I've got the book for it: the one I made the page about for September's Month in Numbers. Knits Men Want; The 10 Rules Every Woman Should Know Before Knitting for a Man. I've even worked out how to use the patterns and I've finished up my sweater and everything. And it's not for The Tall One at all: it's for his dad. A man sweater for doing manly things in - so I took its picture like this:

..and I'm resigned to the fact that, despite the book (which does have lovely, basic-shaped patterns), there really is only one rule to remember. Men don't mind if you knit for them - they only mind if you mind when they wear it for gardening.

I don't.

And that is my Monthly Make for October. Annie the Felt Fairy, whose idea the monthly making was, is still in need of all our best wishes for her recovery - keep it going Annie! And if you would like to see more makes, the place to start this month is with Miss October, Joy of Perfect Little World

What a beautiful sweater! I love the pattern, and I'm sure it will be worn a lot. I think the Tall One would love to have a few of these to take along with him next September. Uncle Dave may be correct, but it doesn't mean they don't need those things!

That sweater is too good for gardening in! What a lovely pattern it is.
When my son went up to Sheffield for uni, I have to admit 'warm clothes' was high on my list of essentials for him. By January, he understood why! He didn't realise there was such a south/north difference! And now he's in Edinburgh .......
I really fancy getting my knitting needles out again, but we have no knitting wool shops around where I live :-( If you know of any good online shops for wool and patterns, could you email me a couple of links?

It's superb, well done :)

He may gently mock, but I bet he would be thrilled to have it, even if he only wore it home alone.

what a gorgeous sweater! you really are quite talented with the knitting needles.

Sian that really is a great sweater, I love the colour and texture.
I thinks it's a compliment if he wants to wear it for gardening if it's something he enjoys - which I'm sure it is :)

What a great looking Make!!! Anytime I read about your knitting, I wish I could knit! Love the color and "chunky" texture.

It's looking great! I think it will suit him well, too :) Maybe TTO will be reconciled to being knit for when he sees how good his dad looks in your knitting?

I'm still working on my scarf, but I am at least fairly confident that it will get past the 'tiny blanket' stage now...

Your sweater is amazing!!!! You are so talented on so many levels. :)

The sweater is gorgeous - never mind the men, I'd buy a big oversized version of that to snuggle into.

I agree with Jennifer - you have so much talent! My sister has offered to teach me knitting basics after bubba is here - I wonder if she knows how much she has bitten off with her offer!

I really like that, lovely manly shade. I am knitting Xmas pressies, a cowl for my mum and mittens for lil sis. Then the dinosaur and perhaps my own cardy,

Whether the men realize it or not, all of them would look good in that sweater. Quite professionally done - and it looks warm too!

Your sweater is gorgeous! And I'll bet your hubby wears it for other than gardening!

Lovely: rugged and soft. What more can a man (or woman!) want? :). I'm sure Al will be glad of at least one. Bet he won't be using it for gardening though!

Your sweater is lovely and looks so soft and cozy, well done you!

Oh so beautiful! and so neatly put together. That's where everything goes to hell in handbasket for me - I can do all the intricate bits with decreasing and stuff and then I have to sew it together and it finishes up looking like a dog bed. Sometimes I over-estimate size too, I am chuckling as I write, I must photogrph Mr M in the last thing I knitted for him - ooh! Storytelling Sunday! oh yes...

This is such a beautiful jumper. I am so impressed. definitely needs wearing outside of gardening. He is very lucky to have it!

That is one gorgeous sweater. A man wouldn't even need to wear a coat over it to keep warm.

Well at least the accountant appreciates your knitting. Why dont you knit the tall one a woolly hat to keep all that hair under control? Go on suggest it....make him squirm;)

When all the spring clothes were in the shops in September, our tall one told us he was going to Europe in December. Clue to headless chicken running around looking for warm clthes. *Slaps forehead. Why couldn´t he think about that in July?* *mom´s long sigh*

Going away to Uni is definitely a time to start thinking of warm clothes... Princess is always cold so when Abi mentioned needing more warm jumpers in Durham I told Princess - giving her another reason to drop Durham lower down her list. But I have also said we'll buy warm clothes before she leave!

So glad you posted the finished product, though seeing the Accountant wearing it would have been the icing on the cake!
Sorry haven't been around to visit you much this past week. Looking after those two munchkins who keep me busy. Loved your 'swimming' layout.

What a great looking sweater! Makes me want to go to the yarn store and get some new yarn.

I would love to be able to knit but there would be no way my husband would wear anything like that. He doesn't ever wear sweaters! LOL He makes me laugh with that attitude, he prefers fleece jumpers/jackets.
