Roses and a Ruby: September at Gotta Craft

The Story:

Two things my Grandma gave me: a little china barrow of roses and a ruby ring. The ring came first. I must have been about ten or eleven when she ushered me into her bedroom (always so sunny, so light) and opened her jewellery box and held out the ring with the ruby. Her birthstone. Our birthstone. Another ten or eleven years passed and Grandma was thinking about leaving the home she knew so well. It was her "front room" (kept for good, a special treat) we wandered into that day. She was looking about for something, I remember, when I saw her eye rest at her table of treasures; and she lifted the little china barrow and handed it to me. Something to remember your old Grandma by, she said, Now let's go and see if I have any buns..Just like that.

The Details:

September's Gotta Craft kit is pink (with a touch of blue thrown in) and pretty; and full of beautiful Prima Annalee paper. My photo was a good match, but you could always print out in black and white if you have a favourite photo you would like to use. It would be perfect for heritage layouts and for a really soft effect I fancy printing an old photo onto some cream textured cardstock . I made some paper roses and I covered the diecut in patterned paper which added a bit more dimension and gave me a base for my title. A bit of handcutting and some gold stitching and that's it. I've always been a big fan of kits; but I Gotta tell you that I just love the size of the ones Sandra puts together. Not too much, not too little. Just right.

It's lovely, Sian - just beautiful :-) I've been haunting the Gotta Craft site to see the kit go on sale, but there doesn't seem to be any sign of it yet!

This has such a lovely vintage feel to it, it's really lovely and yet another interesting story from your family history.

Mel, the kit seems to have come and gone! It shows as out of stock... still you might be able to find the component parts there anyway. It is a good size for a kit - and a good price too. So many kits are over £20 and just have so much stuff that I wouldn't use up!
Sian, I love this - the story is lovely and the roses are fabulous. I like how you have cut a section of roses out, to make a panel on your layout. The circle on the background paper gives it a very finished, pulled-together sort-of feel. The ruby ring and basket of roses are beautiful remembrances of your grandmother. I have an emerald pendant, which my father bought for my Grandma and which she left for me when she died. It's very special to me. Also various other little bits & pieces from my other Grandma. I wouldn't sell them...
Great scrap page - so glad you shared it!

As always a beautiful page and a lovely story. It's good to keep memories like that 'alive' and you tell a story so well.

Beautiful page, I've been checking the Gotta Craft site all day and literally just as it went on sale this evening - it sold out - can't believe it went in about 3 minutes - gutted :-(

Once again, told so beautifully. You know what I'm thinking so I wont say it again except to add, this one brought a lump to my throat! Gorgeous page Sian.

And in answer to your question. I commissioned someone to make her doll a couple of months ago. It's beautiful. But would you believe a parcel arrived today, another bloggy friend had made her one - just because? I can't believe the amazing friends I've made through Blogland. Her birthday is not till the 28th - I really can't wait to give her them.

Absolutely beautiful Sian!
I wear my Great-Grandmother's wedding ring and it came to me via a similar vist to my Grandmother's room!

Beautifully told story, Sian - I remember vividly my own grandmother's front room, kept for 'best' - often slightly chilly because it wasn't used on a daily basis. And the simplicity and lack of maudlin in the giving - very touching... Your page is very beautiful, too.

~sigh~ Oh, Sian, once again I am in awe of your art. I love this layout - not only the design and the story, but the sentiment behind it (you know that I'm a sentimental fool!). The china roses are just lovely and I'm glad you included them in the photo of your layout so we could have a closer look.

I love this so much - it's possibly my favourite of all your layouts (and that's really saying something considering I love ALL your layouts).

This is absolutely stunning...and what a wonderful way to document two such meaningful moments. My Grandma passed on one of her rings to me a few years ago, but sadly she can't quite remember the story behind it (she's now in her 90s). Thank you so much for sharing :)
