Sunshine And Speech Day

This is the page I thought about posting on Fathers Day:

It's my Mum on holiday with her friends, in France at the end of the 1950's. I thought it would be a bit of fun, kind of a gift to my Dad; but it didn't feel right in the end. So I've saved it for today.

It started out as yellow and grey (isn't this such a fresh feeling combination at the minute? I saw a lovely layout using it here yesterday): but I added some powder blue for a 1950's look. If you peer you might spot my experiment with the title.

I like pale shades, I like knocked back tones, but sometimes they need a bit more life if they are to help a page pop. So I've been forcing myself to try more outlining to add emphasis. Some of the letters here are outlined in brown, some aren't and I think it's pretty obvious that the brown needs to be there. I'll be doing a bit more of this, then.Try it, see what you think. I'm doing a second page with the bits I've trimmed from these photos (50's France? I wasn't about to bin that); but that's for again.

We're off to Junior Prize Day this afternoon (English! History! That's my girl!). It's always a mixture of pasts, presents and futures; and as the sweet sound of the School Song rises high to meet the dust dancing in the air, I'm sure I'll think of that other young girl who walked across that very same stage many years ago. Before she went to France. Before she met my Dad...

But you can find my very favourite story about Granny and The Small One swapping notes about school here.

Today I'm Loving...the news that Martha Stewart will be releasing a doily punch (see it here) so the embellishment layering can continue. Brilliant.

I agree the outlining helps - I do this quite a bit with lighter color letters!

Lovely colour scheme, and such great photos - yup, also have to say the outlining really does add that extra bit of pop, I would never have thought to do that! Now why would you go and show me a punch I just HAVE to have LOL.

Lovely layout! I agree, the outlining is just the right touch to make the title stand out a bit.

Wow, Sian, I am in awe of your scrapbook layouts these days. This is fabulous! LOVE the stitching around the circle, the outlining around some of the letters, the color scheme...everything about it!

Congrats to your daughter for her accomplishments! And thanks for the head's up on the Martha Stewart doily punch.

Fantastic post! xo

Love the colour scheme...and there is definately a vintage feel to it all...outlining the letters really works....must try this.
But I really didn't need to know another gorgeous punch is coming!!!

So you didn't get to use your yellow and grey embellishment you made after all - will it be appearing on the next layout?

Doily punches ......mmmmmmmmm. I saw some lovely heart shaped doilies on a blog but I don't know where they came from.

Well done the Small One :)

Great page! The outlining looks fab, I have tried doing that before but I used ink too light to really make a difference, I need a good brown journaling pen.

I want that Martha Stewart punch! How great is it that it punches through felt and thin metals? Oh the possibilities...

yes yes yes to the colour scheme! Also, yellow and grey (and navy blue) together are Quite Parisian, so the French theme is there in the colours too :-). I'm loving the old photos - I went to an antique shop last week and found some really moving photos (of complete strangers, yes, but moving nonetheless) which I'd like to make a layout with soon. somehow it's hard to beat those old pics! x

Ahh.. that is such a cool layout, Sian! I love the circle and the clever layering of the various papers. Also love the stitching and those "doilies" round the outside. Great way to show off those fabulous photos of your mum! I'm sure she'll be proud to see what you've made - and so will your dad!
I dont have many photos of my parents. I must ask my mother what she has and see if I can copy any of her pictures.
My dad was dreadful at having his photo taken, so I have very few of him. But I do have a small number and they are ok. Time I started scrapping them, I think.
Thanks for the links to CurlyWiggles and the Martha Stewart punch.
I have some mini-circular doilies (see my scrap page from 21st June).
I also saw the heart-shaped doilies.. they may be available at DotComGiftShop (which is my current favourite place.. for various reasons, including doilies...)
Great scrap page, Sian!

Love the layering of your LOs, Sian, and the layering of your memories and story-telling too. All so rich in texture ... And the soft yellow and grey is wonderful.

That LO is gorgeous & I so agree with outlining...I do it all the time & get really cross when the pen slips!!! But those are fabby photo's...look forward to seeing what you do with the remainder too! Are you signed up for Shimelles new class?

Lovely layout and I agree that the letters need outlinging. Hope you had a lovely day at school today :)

Hi Sian! Those photos are fantastic & you have shown them off really well on the LO. The letters definitely look better outlined don't they!
Well done to The Small One on her achievements too xx

Your layouts are perfect! What lovely photos.
The small one is obviously a 'chip off the old block' I can see her with her own blog very soon.

Waaaw this is gorgeous. Love the black and white bits going round the outside - really adds to the vintagey feel - almost like those sun bursts you see from around that era. Really love this Sian.

Beautiful layout! When I click on it, I see that the background paper is what really makes it - it goes so perfectly with the B&W photos.

Another wonderful layout. I really like the circle in the middle and the way you framed it with stitching. The butterfly in the corner is the perfect final touch. I really enjoy studying your layouts--so much to see. Congrats to your daughter!

Thanks for the mention :) I really like this layout, the photos are stunning and your colour scheme really sets them off. I wasn't sure about that YLB paper but ended up loving it.
