It was the best of times. it was the worst of times, it was last Tuesday teatime. I was serving up the dish of the day when The Small One pulled up a chair and launched her Big Topic. Braces, retainers, orthodontics, call it what you will: we've been talking about it quite a lot recently. We've covered the whole subject inside, outside, upside, downside, any-which-way-but-loose, to be honest. But that's okay. We're sorted. She knows what has to be done and she's ready for it. I could tell by her face. It's all clear in her mind.
She took a mouthful of spaghetti and chewed thoughtfully. "Yes," she said, firmly. "I'd much rather do this now. I mean, I don't want to end up all grown up an' all, getting bits sawn off my teeth and new ones stuck on." She threw me a glance. "That's not good."
The Tall One stopped with his fork in mid air. His mouth fell open so wide he nearly de-bolognesed all down the front of his t shirt. "What?" he said, looking at me, then looking at his sister. "Are you trying to tell me that not only is she a fake redhead; but that she's got fake teeth as well?" He lowered his head into his hands and began to rock gently from side to side. "Nothing," he said, bitterly. "Nothing is what you think it is in this world." He spiked a piece of broccoli. "I used to think this stuff was made from cute little miniature trees. Now I know it's just vegetables."
We're having roast potatoes this week. Less messy.
I'm off to the hairdressers now. I don't have any photos of my best bolognese. So I'll leave you with one of the only food photos I've ever taken. Delicious.
Today I'm Loving...Paper Doll Review Anyone who loves paper dolls as much as I do (and that's a lot) will enjoy this. Hope there are some fellow fans out there.

It was the best of posts, it was the best of photos. It was Tuesday lunchtime. I needed to smile. I just did.
Thank you :-)
Cute story! I love the dessert photo. Yum! I'm a huge fan of those cookies and I can never get enough ice cream.
Great story. It is amazing how kids can obsess on one topic (like braces). And I remember after I told DS that there was no Santa. A couple weeks later, he was wiggling a loose tooth and said, "If there's no Santa, I guess there's no tooth fairy either?" "That's right." I said. "Easter bunny?" "Nope," I replied. "I shoulda known." he said.

Hi there, just wanted to say hi and how pleased I was to find that you are the person beneath me on the blog round the world list! Us (fake) redheads have to stick together (although I was an original ginger until mother nature decided to turn some of my hair 'colourless')
Loving your blog by the way, you have such a good sense of humour!
Fun post! Love the way you write :) Great ice cream pic, yum!
Have you considered starting a club for fake redheads? I'd join! Although actually,I'm having some time off being a chemically enhanced redhead and am trying out 'natural light brown' instead ...
Love your writing style Sian - always makes me smile :)
I love the story, very sweet!
LOL!
That does look delicious!
Oh Sian....I just love the way you tell a story....looks like the tall one may be inheriting your way with words....and,of course, out of the mouths of babes etc!!!
Sometimes I become a fake redhead when my highlights go wrong, though it's not the whole head. My brother has bright red hair (real) so that's probably where it comes from! : )
Very Funny!!
I love finding a blog that I can laugh out loud with - annd you've got great layouts too... off to subscribe...!
Me again - just to tell you I've given you a little award :-)
Lovely post, Sian! Made me laugh lots. Kids say such funny things - "fake redhead, fake teeth"... and I love the stuff about broccoli!
I was a "real redhead" - well dark auburn, til nature took its course. Wonder why it's the red ones that go first? Anyway, yesterday I had the natural leftovers enhanced a little, by unnatural means, so I'm warm brown with reddish highlights again now!
hi sian,
you write so brilliantly, maybe you should have your own book! thanx for popping over to curly land and yes please to the fudge recipes!

So, funny stories out of the mouths of our offspring just keep on coming? Very well written, thanks for sharing this one!
Braces. Oh I remember them well. Headgear and everything. So worth it though :)
Ah yes, Humility, one of the most 'precious gifts' our children give us. Great story! And most beautifully told.
Beautifully told story - made me laaugh out loud - good job I was on my tea break! J x
Perfect beginning. Made me laugh.
Brilliant post! Can see why it is your favourite :)
Oooh, this is just lovely. B
Beautifully told as well.
You are such a great storyteller! And yes I love paper dolls too- I think they might have been my favourite plaything as a child. Jx
Even though I've commented before, gotta say: your kids are hilarious and that dessert still looks delicious.
Yes, this is still a good one Sian ... I was going to say this time that TTO sounds just like and Australian but considering most of us are related to someone over there, perhaps we may sound like him! ;-)
