Storytelling Sunday Two: The Words The Pictures

Hello! Hello! Welcome to Storytelling Sunday. Your first-Sunday-of-the-Month chance to share your story. Any story at all. It doesn't have to be a big one. It doesn't have to be a clever one. It can be a very small one indeed. We'd still love to hear it. Or see it! If you find it more fun to tell your story with pictures, please, let's have a look: short, long, a few sentences, or many more? I'll take my stories anyway you care to offer them!

I have a picture for you today

and the story comes not so much from the photo itself, but from what I remember when I look at it. The back story I guess you could call it...

The Ring's The Thing

It's our wedding anniversary this month and this photo was taken almost exactly a year before we got married. I'm just turned twenty one. I'm on a ferry, taking a day trip to Ayr (with what looks like a sackful of sandwiches), and my boyfriend has just offered to take my photo. Funny, I'm pretty sure I took one of him too, but I can't find it now. Maybe I pinned it up somewhere, above my desk, to look at as I wrote my history essays..

..It was a good day. The sun shone, the ham sandwiches stayed put despite the rough sea; and I bought a postcard with puffins on. Best of all, though, was our secret. No one else knew. Back at home in my boyfriend's room, safely tucked away where it couldn't be found , was my engagement ring. We had bought it together a few days before with the proceeds from his summer job and I'd been wearing it in private. Only in private: it wasn't to go public until we could get home to tell my Mum, so you won't see it in the picture even if you peer very closely. I look so ridiculously young. And that's because I was. It is, after all, a very long time ago. Twenty five years. It sounds like a lifetime. But it doesn't feel like one.

And that's my story for today. If you have one to share we'd love to hear from you! A photo and a few words (or maybe the few words without the photo?) or something a bit longer. I love them all! Create your  Storytelling Sunday post with an introduction (so your readers know what's going on) and a link back here and then come on over. The linky stays open all week, so if your story isn't ready for Sunday - no worries! And if you add a link - then, please, do say hello to some other storytellers. We can't tell stories on our own, we need an audience. So.. ready, steady, story..

I sat down here to procrastinate over the ironing and what should pop up ... a lovely story.
Congratulations to you both ... now, back to that ironing!

Such a lovely story Sian. Paul and I were married when I was 23 - which seems impossibly young today, but seemed just right at the time.
I followed your summer love theme as well for my story.

A lovely story Sian - Hugh and I married when I was 20! So young! Looking forward to seeing what you get up to to celebrate your silver wedding anniversary soon!

Congratulations!

Oh I agree - you were so young. It has been a continual shock to both Wookie and me that our children are now older than we were when we met, moved in together and are heading up to when we were wed. Definitely a lifetime ago :)

Do like the idea that his photo was lost because it was pinned up somewhere for you to gaze at. I know I've lost photos of Wookie that way. Occasionally hope I'll find a negative strip dating from wayyy back then.

I find it so hard to think that time passes by much quicker than it feels it should have!! I am posting now as I am off to see my Summer Love again today xxx

Happy Anniversary to you both...does that make it your Silver Wedding Anniversary-or will that be next year? Isn't it funny how these days we think think that people getting married at 21 are very young, and yet it was very much the norm for us?

Awww, lovely memories:) I got married at 20!!! It was young but here we are 24 years later, still together. I think it depends on your characters on weather a marriage works or not.Congrats on your anniversary btw.

Isn't it great how a photo can spark so many memories?
I was 21 when I got engaged too - doesn't that seem young now? You certainly look a happy 'soon to be officially engaged' girl!

I'll be joining in, but it will be an evening post I think. They seem to have become a habit at the moment!

Every time that you tell a story, I feel as though I know you a little bit better. It's strange to realise that we've never met!

I've finally found the courage to join in - and have posted my own story this morning. So, hopefully, you can get to know me a little better too - in all my eccentricities! x

Such a lovely story and you look so much younger, barely older than my Devon in that photo. Scary thought!

I often wish I had met Craig when I was younger but then I also wonder if I had to sort through the dregs to appreciate him as much as I do now ;)

Wonderful story! I found a photo from the year before DH & I got engaged and I also thought "We were so young then!" and yet we felt so old & mature..

That photo brings back a great memory for you. There's nothing better than young love and the secrets that just you two share. I do have one question. What's a puffin?

Julie Kirk said...

Happy Anniversary. You look very happy in that photo together with your secret plans and your Santa sack. It's nice when you can think back and remember clearly the 'back story' to photos.

Wishing you and the Accountant a Happy Anniversary, Sian! You don't seem to have aged much at all :). I'm guessing Mum approved ...

Wonderful story, Sian, and beautifully told.

I had to chuckle at your "impossibly young" phrase. You are so right, but these days I also find myself wondering how I can be so "impossibly old" when it seems just yesterday that I was in a place similar to yours in this months story.

What a lovely story and lovely memories. It's made me want to go off on a day trip of my own somewhere with a ton of sandwiches :)

Hello Sian, I loved your story, so romantic! It was great to be back with you all this month, looking forward to reading them all tomorrow. I have been away for a few days, my lovely husband linked my story for me! Sending you a bit of sunshine Sian.

Just turned 21? You look about 12! Ok, maybe 14... Great story!

Happy Anniversary!!!!!!! I love the stories behind photos. I often wonder about the stories behind those older photos that no one in the family knows anything about other than who the people are.

I don't know how you managed to keep the secret, I don't think I could have!

What a lovely story Sian. Congratulations

Happy Anniversary! I love how happy you look in the photo. It's sweet to think of you keeping your engagement secret. How long was it until you told your mum? I bet you were bursting by then!

Thanks for linking me up to Sunday Storytelling. I'm going to spend some time tomorrow enjoying some other people's stories. x
