Storytelling Sunday - How Things Work

"So, Granny," said The Small One, as she rushed through the door. "Mum told everyone who reads her blog about me cooking oven chips with a hairdryer, and now they want to know who I get my experimenting from?"

"Mmm, I wonder," said Granny with a smile. "Did I ever tell you about the time I tried to hatch a birds egg? I thought it would have a better chance if it was closer to the sun, so I balanced it on top of a pole to raise it up."

"Or did I ever tell you about the time I tried to make soup in my locker in school?" I asked. "The school dinners were so bad, I tried to heat up my lentils for my sticky picture. In a jamjar with some tap water."

"I didn't know that," laughed Granny. "Or how about the time your sister grew mould in the hotpress. Though, wait, that was an official experiment for her Biology exam."

"They didn't let you do Biology, did they, Mum?" said The Small One, with a wicked glint in her eye.

"Well, no. Not real Biology," I had to concede. "I was in the General Science class with the other rubbish at science arts students. But sometimes -sometimes- they let us experiment. Otherwise, how would I have been able to set the curtain on fire? They must have let me near a bunsen burner for that."

"I don't think I knew about that one either, funnily enough," said Granny with interest.

"Moving on," I added hastily, "Keep trying things out, daughter of mine. It's the best way to learn. Now, anyone for coffee?"

And that's my tale for this month. How about you? Have you got one to share? Please add your link and then we'll all be able to enjoy it too. And if you are reading through Google reader, click through, read a little, rest, relax..and have a great Sunday!

What a great story - I believe the Chemistry teach rued the day he let me take that class - none of my experiments worked out at all! My story is set to go later on (closer to Sunday), but maybe I'll set it free earlier.

Great story Sian. Fire with a bunsen burner, huh??

So excited I got my story ready this month - one of my favorite funny travel stories.

Great story Sian. Makes me remember that for some reason I could never get the bunsen burners to work - maybe that was good. :)

I get worried about some of the things our kids try out ... we have a very good first aid kit and a couple of fire extinguishers around!

Another fun story, as always. You weren't alone in being rubbish at Science. 26% in mock O Level Chemistry, anyone?

Great story Sian. One of our laboratory assistants in high school managed to blow the lab up!

I was pretty rubbish at science as well....though don't actually remember setting anything on fire!!

We would probably have been great friends if we had met at school, I was a 'rubbish at science' girl too!
Another great story, can't tell you how much I look forward to Storytelling Sunday each month.

Great story, Sian, and a terrific LO to match! It seems to me that willingness to experiment helps you be the creative person you are.

I still don't know how I got a science degree! I would love to have taken art history, but somehow it didn't fit with nursing LOL! Your story was the bomb ;)

I once burnt a hole in the classroom carpet.... I was relieved of my science monitor duties after that! ;) But trying things out is *definitely* the best way to learn :)

PS Fabby layout, as always xx

Oh Sian, this is wonderful. My science teacher tried SO HARD to be patient with me. Once again, thank you for today. I am very late but have a free evening and a glass of something chilled in front of me.

Lovely story Sian, experimenting is obviously in the genes! My childhood experiments always went horribly wrong! :)

Anther great story - I've just got back from a week away and am enjoying reading everyones stories.

Another lovely story Sian, my memories of Science are when I accidentally picked up a test tube of red hot red lead powder and skinned the palm of my hand - hated science ever since. I hope my (sort of )story was ok to enter today :-)

One day, I should experiment and join in. In the meantime, I'll just continue to enjoy your stories x

I always love your stories Sian and this one certainly didn't disappoint.

Hee hee! I love how you put so much dialogue in your stories, it makes it so alive. And I like how you were accidentally revealing things in front of your mum from your school days! Fabulous. x

Another great story . . . what I liked best is how some of your "experiments" were revealed to your mother. I remember my brother telling some of his escapades one night. My father was beside himself laughing. Had he known about them at the time, there would have been no laughing!

I think the best stories are the ones told among the family generations, like yours today. I'm seeing more of my blog buddies linking to your Storytelling Sunday, so I'll be thinking of a story for July!

I just love this. I was one of those arty scientists too :P

Great story as always. One day I will be around to join in with this.

What a lovely story Sian! I've been known to set wires alight in electronics class, and a ceramic pot caught fire in chemistry, the pot burst into little pieces, and it look a chunk out of the work bench - which I think is still the same to this day!

Another one here who was rubbish at Science!! Great story as usual - added my to the list - sorry its a bit late! J x

me and science didn't mix! and now I have an engineer in the house! I've stopped asking how things work - I haven't got the energy to understand all the technical explanation I get! Your layout is just lovely
