You Need to Know

When you grow up with teachers for parents, you get used to being told things. Lots of things. Useful, educational things you didn't realise you needed to know. Especially when you were only asking if there were any more cornflakes.

So I'm always just a little bit wary of, um, instructional opportunities with my own two. All the same, every so often, the stars align, I'm feeling my parenting groove, and I open my big mouth..

This page records a day when The Small One and I talked about Suffragettes and elections and why I like to use my vote to honour the bravery of those women who dared to ask.

The journaling reads: "The end of term production of Mary Poppins gave The Small One a chnace to march on stage as one of Mrs Banks' Suffragette friends. We had just finished voting in the European election and so we had an interesting opportunity to talk about equality. The background photos are from the BBC History magazine's article on The Cat and Mouse Act.

Before I go today- Gotta Crafters, if you would like a peek at this month's kit, then head over to the shop blog where I have posted some sneaks today.

ok, now you know that all your layouts blow me away, but this one .... honestly, I just love it, and not just the story behind it.

It's got so much interest, my eyes just find new things I love on it all the time.

Another stunning LO...gorgeous photo, a wonderful memory documented & fabulously educational to boot!!

I often dispense tid-bits from my wealth of wisdom with along with the breakfast cereal, but I don't think anyone notices!!

The layout is incredible. Don't worry too much about dispensing advice when you know the answers.

My girls somehow grew up thinking I know everything about everything. Now when they ask me very specific things and I remind them that I am not a doctor, a chemist, or whatever profession I would need to be in to have a prayer of answering, they look at me like I am as dumb as a box of rocks. My IQ has probably dropped 200 points in the last two years!

A wonderful LO,Sian....and love how you've found such perfect embellishments for it. Bet TSO will remember this bit of history forever.

Sian - the LO just makes me happy! Love all the details (like the yellow sash across the top left hand corner). It's put a smile on my face today, thank you!

Fabulous layout, Sian!
Funny thing, my both parents are teachers , as my grandfather. My mother was (and still is) very "education oriented". I am the opposite. I expect my kids do well in school, only because I know they can, but their social well being is much more important for me.

What an amazing LO and great thing to document. I hear you on the "when and what" we try to educate our kids on. I too had the talk regarding the importance of my girls voting, once they came of age. I wanted them to know the history of how women had to fight for this basic right. Other memorable topics were, the importance of buying a good thread count in sheets and how economical the purchase of a turkey is. LOL I still get bugged about my motherly "words of wisdom". Hey, I should document this! Have a great day!! :)

I love how you can turn any subject into an amazing scrap page! This layout is really fab, even though it is also incredibly "busy". You are really good at making pages full of detail and colour, which somehow always work wonderfully well.
Love the yellow "votes" sash in the top corner!
And I agree that it is sometimes important to talk to our children about history and other information. My DS likes to have discussions and ask questions; problem is, nowadays I often can't answer him and we end up looking it up somewhere! Did I really stop learning at 13, or is it just that he's learning different stuff to what I did in school?

I love that you do layouts that commemorate bits of history - not only for our planet but for your family as well, Sian. Very well done again, my friend! xo

What an awesome opportunity with your daughter! After all, she ought to know what she's doing in the play, shouldn't she? Love how you captured this in your layout!

I'm afraid I'm always looking for teachable moments, which tends to mortify my kids!

Both my parents were teachers, and my kids got two teachers for parents as well. I always thought of it as an advantage in most situations, from both viewpoints. As always, there's so much goodness to examine in this layout.

Great photo - I like that you used the BBC articles as background material. When the nieces and nephews are visiting, I unabashedly teach. Of course, because I'm not the parent they think everything we do here is fun and don't realize they are learning so much! :>)

Good for you - for a super layout; good for you - for your thoughtful parenting; good for you - for taking voting so seriously and remembering *why*; good for you - for discussing it with TSO so she too knows the background to something so important. Love this post altogether, Sian xx
