Moving Forward, Looking Back

We all like to take photos. Lots of photos. Some of them we use, some we delete; and some, for me anyway, stay in the "I'm not quite sure why I took that" pile. But remember the days before digital?  When every photo on a film had to count? It meant thinking before clicking, saving the last couple of shots in case something really good came along. And yet: sometimes you wanted to take a photo because something inside said you needed to, that the picture you wanted - which wasn't of anything really special - was going to be important in the future. Did you ever have that feeling?

I can think of a couple of times. Once, when The Small One arrived home from nursery (not yesterday then) and jumped out of the car into a big pile of leaves. She kicked and crunched and I ran inside for the camera and took one picture which I loved, but which sat in a photo album for years until I started scrapbooking. Then I made a layout and it was published In Scrapbook Inspirations and what pleased me the most was that I had always thought that photo was meant for something special. That doesn't sound too fanciful, does it?

It happened last week, too, when I spread out this month's Studio Calico kit and saw the 7Gypsies Avignon paper and the colours which went it. I thought at once of a photo I had taken on a day trip to France - oh, it must be seventeen years ago now - before the children were born. I took it and filed it away because I knew I'd end up doing something with it. And here it is. Two children, two houses and several cameras later. Something is telling me that I'm not an "in the moment" scrapper at all. It's as if the story has to grow before it comes out. I've a feeling I'll be coming back to this idea..

Today I'm Loving...Geek Crafts. Crocheted Daleks, Einstein softies..It's a bit of fun.

Both LOs are perfect ~ it was well worth waiting for the right moment to happen along.

I think I'm probably not an 'in the moment' scrapper...I frequently am drawn back to old photos to scrap....it tends to only be holidays I scrap very soon after....and even then not always.
Two lovely layouts.

Love the bunting! And love the content of your post today - so much to think about. . . whether stories need to gestate and grow vs. they need to be told in the moment.
I'll be pondering that!

ps Glad you liked the banksy post. Allthough he did his most famous work in London and Paris, he's apparently here now.

I'm really into finding old photos to make into layouts at the moment, loving the way it brings back happy memories of when the children were young.
Your layouts are lovely and well worth the wait in putting onto a page!

Love the layouts. I'm trying to be more "of the moment" in taking my photos, but I like to let them stew or percolate a little while till scrapping them too.

Lovely pages Sian. I too can remember back to when the cost of film developing meant that every photo had to count. I so wish that digital camers were around when I had Gracia as I love all the arty photos that people take of their babies now.

So inspiring. I love the second layout especially, and you found the perfect prop to photograph it with. Since I started scrapping late in life, I have more old photos than new. I need to get a move on though.

beautiful layouts Sian! and i agree that sometimes stories need to marinate and gain the perspective of time before they are ready to be told and be truly meaningful to us!

I'm definitely not an in the moment scrapper - in fact, I'm not even a scrapper at the moment but you really struck a chord with me here and I know whatyou mean about those photos that just have that special something about them. These are both gorgeous pages Sian and I really love the way you take the picture of them, so pretty. There's me trying to cut as much background out as possible and you just go right ahead and make it a feature. I love it!

I'll scrap just about any photos going, but mostly they are more recent - must look back through the older ones (including those pre-digital prints!) and remind myself of what's there!! Love your layouts (as always) xx

PS Crocheted Dalek tea cosies would go well with that latest Dalek episode of Doctor Who - did you see it? I never thought I'd hear a Dalek offering anyone a drink!
