...have you ever seen a dodo? I like to go and look at this one. Our local museum has a huge collection of stuffed animals, but I make a point of hurrying past the Irish wolfhound, even the polar bear, to get to the dodo. I've heard it said that some people believe they never existed at all, that dodos are mythical creatures; but this isn't true. They did really exist, once, in Mauritius; though the last recorded sighting was in 1662.
Of course, that makes it likely that this one isn't entirely real. It's probably,um is there a delicate way of putting this? cobbled together from bits. I like him all the same. They think the ones in the wild were over 3 feet tall. Maybe it's a good thing he's behind glass...
This page was made for a Get It Scrapped article on using Botanical Prints. I hunted through every piece of paper I own, looking for the right thing and in the end I came up with an older sheet from SEI. I trimmed out some plants (definitely doing more hand cutting again these days) and made a museum look, with the journalling typed up to look like an exhibit label. That dodo? Legendary..
I love this, partly because it's lovely to see him scrapped, partly because it's a beautiful layout and partly because I had a weird dream about a huge ancient-looking bird earlier this week ... maybe I was channelling your dodo energies. [Not a sentence one ever expects to write!]
ReplyDeletep.s: we have a 'famous' stuffed lion in a local museum ... haven't visited him for years though.
Your hand cutting of the embellishments is wonderful! I've never seen a dodo---stuffed or otherwise!
ReplyDeleteGreat layout...love the fussy -cutting!

I can safely say I've never seen a dodo - until now. Now I've at least seen a photo of a maybe-partly-real-stuffed-one.
ReplyDeleteThat floral piece is perfect. It's as if the dodo is in the wild. I like all the little bits and pieces you used too---especially the little wooden birds.
ReplyDeleteYes, I have seen a Dodo - well another probably assembled from various places stuffed version :) I like the floral addition to your fauna page!
ReplyDeleteNever seen a dodo before! What an odd bird for sure! I love the cut out leaves! I really need to do more hand cutting, I enjoy the process and I love the end result :)
ReplyDeleteFabulous page - so much depth to it. I can't say I'd ever seen a non-cartoon-character dodo, until you showed me.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen a Dodo before but saw a stuffed haggis in a Glasgow museum!!
ReplyDeleteThe spray of leaves is so nicely placed, curving round the photo like this. akes me feel I am looking at him (her?) through jungly foliage. A lovely colour combination too ...
ReplyDeleteThis is such a lovely layout! The search for the paper was well-worth it :) Gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great layout!
ReplyDeleteYour cobbled-together dodo is still head-and-shoulders above the (Chinese) zoo that attempted to pass a dog off as a lion. I forget what the lion was off doing--maybe we don't want to know?? The plot was discovered by a young mother who took her child to the zoo in order to teach him animal sounds--and somewhere during the encounter with the supposed "lion," it barked instead of roared.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I love how you turn your CT assignments into mini-adventures!
Oh I love how you scrap interesting stories. Didn't the pirates kill them for food ?!? Not sure why I remember that!!!
ReplyDeleteYour layouts are always such fun Sian. I love your imagination.
ReplyDeleteDodos certainly have character ~ he;s fabulous!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful colours Sian. I love 'cobbled together', so much more rewarding than a purpose made kit or collection. I love dodo's, they look so clumsy (probably their downfall!) and remind me of the game where you draw different animal parts to reveal a strange creature.
ReplyDeleteIts a great looking page, cobbled together or not!
ReplyDeleteClassic Sian: fun story and lovely layout. Perfect!
ReplyDeleteAnd no, I've never seen a dodo before. :o)
Love the distressed edge! And no on the dodo.
ReplyDeleteRinda
What a coincidence I saw not just one but TWO dodo's just yesterday :) We visited the Natural History Museum. Didn't get to close with the crowds but we shall be going back soon!
ReplyDeleteI love your homage to the dodo - cobbled together or not ;) I'll upload my dodo pics to my Rocking Friday later so you can compare with yours ;)
Great layout, I would love to see a Dodo, I think they look amazing x
ReplyDeleteI'm enjoying hand cutting and hand stitching again at the moment too. I love the layers and the textured edges.
ReplyDeleteGreat layout - I like the museum look and all the distressed edges of the layout!
ReplyDeleteGreat looking layout Sian and no I've never seen a Dodo. I had no idea that it's been that long since one was sighted either.
