Suddenly the Story..

I hadn't intended to hit you with another quote card today. Honestly. But I was rifling through my notebook, looking for something else entirely, when I spotted this and thought - Storytelling Sunday. Pick Your Precious: an extraordinary pleasure in an ordinary thing. That's about right, isn't it?

That's what I've been discovering over those Sundays when I wander the house, search high up on a shelf or crawl under the bed, looking for the little something I know is going to bring a story to mind. The difference between the ordinary and the extraordinary is right there in the telling; and we, all of us, owe it to ourselves and our families, I think, to stop and say - look. This matters. Not the thing itself, but what the thing brings us. Its story is our story. Pick Your Precious - next Sunday - and let it speak.

What to pick? Well, it's July: we're off travelling soon, so maybe this time round that might be a theme? Something to do with a journey? a special trip? something you have brought back or a gift from afar? Just a thought: if you are having trouble coming up with an object, ask someone close to you. What does your family or friends think you hold close to your heart? maybe there is something everyone has always wanted to hear more about? You might be surprised by what they suggest. Or maybe a family member has a story to tell? Everyone, everywhere has something to be proud of..

Or something they can't help reaching out to touch every time they walk past it. Or something they think about throwing out every time there is a clearout, but somehow it never happens. Or something that puts a smile on a face every time its story is told. Pick one..take a picture..write three sentences..suddenly, there you have it. A story.

We're halfway through the year now: how many objects have you collected? I know I heard talk of a mini album or two, or a little bound book of simple photos and stories? That's my plan. A history of me (or you) in twelve objects? Next Sunday will be number seven...

  1. I love the quote and it reminds me of the fridge magnet I was given for being slimmer of the week last week: "the difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little bit extra" :)

  3. A great quote. I have just been writing my story as I have a day off today. It's not travel related though! Might do one of those for August :)

  4. A perfect quote for me at the moment. Having met up with 'the boys' recently, most of whom seem to have done extraordinary things (in my eyes) in comparison to my very quiet life!
    The dangerous notebook strikes again!

  10. That a fab quote. And I have to add that another difference between an ordinary story and an extraordinary story may be how well you are listening. I'll be listening next Sunday for sure, although I have no idea yet what story I may be telling.

  16. I was struggling to think of what to use this month but your post here today has given me an idea. There is something in a cupboard here that I use every day and no one else dares to use it because although it's an everyday object it's acquired a special place in my possessions. It's not pretty and it's nothing special to any one else but it's precious to me.

  34. That's a great quote. I thought I had a story all planned for tomorrow but it's not travel related and in fact is more August related so I'll put that one aside for a month because I've got the perfect thing for a travel related post.

  35. Here it is--halfway to the deadline--and I still haven't posted. But I do have an idea (and maybe even a follow-up for next month) so don't give up on me yet.
