I'm feeling book-ish today. It started when I made a little notebook with some more pieces from my Midnight Rooster Nantucket kit.

Because I often use patterned paper as backgrounds I had three pieces of cardstock to play with - and that "bookplate" pattern from Studio Calico gave me an idea. I cut each sheet into pieces 6x8 inches and sewed them together around three sides to create pockets. Then into each pocket I slid a labelled card for each day of the month. I'll use these to make a reading record for 2012.
For January I already have
- The Crafter's Guide to Taking Great Photos by Heidi Adnum. This one is definitely recommended! Lots of practical advice divided into chapters dealing with different crafts; case studies from crafters; everything you have ever wanted to know, beautifully presented
- The Art of iPhoneography by Stephanie Roberts. This was a surprise Christmas present and I'm enjoying dipping into it. I especially like the chapter called "Shoot How You Feel"
- On Writing by Stephen King. Which I bought and read last year and have hauled out again after I found that article on over used words last week.
- Charles Dickens: a Life by Clare Tomalin. So much I didn't know..
..and that leaves me with the winner from last week's Pass The Book Year Two (thanks again Melissa!) . Tantalizing Textures will be going to Fiona from Fiona's Flotsam. Fiona, please drop me an email with your address and I'll get that in the post.

Great idea for recording the books you read this year. I have noted down the Dickens title and will see if I can borrow it from the library. Did you watch the new dramatisation of Edwin Drood that was on last week?
ReplyDeleteI've never considered a reading journal or log book before, apart from mandatory ones at school. One I'm enjoying at the moment is Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson ... some of the pieces are really clicking into place now!

A good idea, Sian! I would copy you (sincerest form of flattery and all that...), but I'm sure I wouldn't make time to keep the journal up to date. I'm not going to pressure myself to start yet another project... I need to focus on a few things this year, rather than just fling all my energies to the four winds (my usual course!).

Talking of overused words... I am sure that "Lovely" must be the word I overuse the most. Hum.

ReplyDeleteGreat idea, that iPhone book sounds interesting. If you like Stephen king have you tried some of the swedish crime/thriller writers? Such as the wallender series or Jo Nesbo? The snowman is a real chiller....ha ha get it? Btw the mini book looks fab, I can't seem to get into mini books.

ReplyDeleteThe library paper is perfect for you, isn't it?! Will you be keeping it by your bed (I'm presuming that's where you keep your books)? And remember Dr Seuss: The more you read, the more you will know. The more you know, the more places you will go.
ReplyDeleteLovely, lovely. That is quite a book list, impressive. I'm sticking with my perennial winter favorite, Jane Austen, and re-reading Emma, for something like the fifth time.
ReplyDeleteLovely journal. I've been keeping track of my reading in a journal for over 20 years now. I'm sure I've forgotten to add a few over the years, but it's fun to look back and see what interested me over the years. I loved Writing by Stephen King, and the iPhonography book is lying on my nightstand. Off to check out The Crafter's Guide . . . I'm reading the Steve Jobs biography now. It's long, but I'm enjoying every bit of it.

I really like this book - and it's a great idea. I seem to have fallen into a habit of not reading recently (terrible , I know!) - so maybe this is what I need :)

ReplyDeleteThanks for coming to say hello, it has been a while! As for the college degree I am afraid it never happened. There was just no way I could of found suitable childcare given an ever changing timetable and I just couldn't of done that to Emily. It meant several sessions and different nurserys and that would of been unfair and I never would of lived with myself. It was a dream I chose to give up for my family and although I am still upset I never got to do it, I know in my heart that I made the right choice. Maybe one day....eh!
Right, off to pin this pretty little number.

ReplyDeleteI never manage to keep a record of what I read. Limiting it to books rather than mags might help but I found even that hard enough. Did briefly get tempted as several friends are doing that - one is reading them in alphabetical order too, but resisted.
Is the Stephen King any good? Keep having it recommended as a classic on writing, although I'm firmly not making a list of things to read this year I've sorta put that on the one I'm not making...
Brilliant mini-book. I have recently remembered my love for mini-book and have lots in my mind that I want to make!
