When I saw Hans Christian Andersen disappearing round the corner, I knew I was in the right place. He had a purple tailcoat, a black stove pipe hat; and his audience in the palm of his hand. Of course. A walking tour of Copenhagen with the man himself? Maybe next time. We were on a coach tour. But we were headed to the place of dreams..to someone I'd wanted to see since I'd watched Danny Kaye, late seventies, wet Saturday afternoon.
And there she is. The Little Mermaid. She's tiny; but at least she wasn't missing any limbs. The Guide told us that bits of her sometimes disappear overnight. The Danes blame the Swedes. Seems to me that idiot sounds the same in any language. My faithful photography companion was happy to pose beside her (funny, all girls look that size alongside that hair. It's not just mermaids. They seem to like it..). The others were back on the bus. a bit Denmark-ed out. It had been a busy day.
We had visited the Crown Jewels at Rosenborg Castle. So relaxed, we were even allowed to take pictures!
As always, it was the little details I enjoyed the most: a stylish, but practical, modern resting spot for visitors in the middle of the grandeur and a plain, painted door singing open to reveal a throne beyond.
We had time for a little shopping. Little E - I know you are reading. Tell your Mum her watering can came from that very shop.
Now that is MY kind of shop! Very pleased to see the little mermaid there.
ReplyDeleteI never realised the mermaid statue was so small....though next to TTO most things must look small!!
ReplyDeleteone day we'll get there! loving the look of the pretty shop x
ReplyDeleteI had heard she was very small - looks like you had a lovely sunny day there ... did you see our Mary?
ReplyDeletelovely shots - I've wanted to visit for similar amounts of time.
ReplyDeletelegoland, I remember a viking LOL
ReplyDeleteSuch a shame you missed out on a walk with Hans Christian Andersen. I bet he had a tale or two to tell.
ReplyDeleteLoving the photography trip around Scandinavia.

ReplyDeleteLovely photos! I love visiting palaces
ReplyDeleteGreat snapshots Sian. I love the juxtaposition of the ordinary with the regal.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't realised that she was so small! I have only ever seen close up pictures and never anything with a size comparison. WOW! One day I will see her in real life :-)
ReplyDeleteCopenhagen is on my 'to do' list so it's great to see your photos. looks like you had a great trip and saw so much on your travels.
ReplyDeleteWonderful photos! That little shop looks like one I would like to visit.
ReplyDeleteThankyou for the glimpses of the (surprisingly) little mermaid and some more of your travels. I would love a rummage in that shop :o)
ReplyDeleteHans Christian Anderson is one of my favourite Danny Kaye films (next to The Court Jester) and have always loved Hans Christian Anderson stories - the proper ones, not the Disney-fied ones. Am very jealous you saw the little mermaid but I too never realised she was so dinky.
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous trip - love that picture of the wooden door creaking open to all that splendour.
How wonderful to visit a place you've always dreamt about. I felt that way when I made it to Portmierion in Wales (the site of "the Village" in the old "Prisoner" TV show).
ReplyDeleteRinda
What a wonderful visit - I'd no idea she was so small either! Did you buy yourself anything nice in the shop? I don't quite know how you could resist!
ReplyDeleteThe mermaid sculpture is pretty neat and the shops look like a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to more glimpses of your vaca!

ReplyDeleteI just love travel photos, and yours are wonderful. I was only in Europe once, nearly 45 years ago now, but I remember the Little Mermaid!
ReplyDeleteLove the photos esp the one of the door leading into the gorgeous room and wow! the crown. Happy to see TTO was willing to step out of the bus to provide a comparison for us :)
ReplyDeleteWow Denmark looks amazing, this has to be on my wish-list of places to visit! The shops look like everything Danish style should be.
ReplyDeleteLol the hair....tell me about it. Great photos Sian, looks like you visited some lovely places. Btw, original Wallender on next week....yay:)
ReplyDeleteI'm amazed that you were allowed to take photos of the jewels and I'd have wanted to bring home lots of those pretty ceramics.
ReplyDeleteJust love the interior shot of the shop!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous places! And the details are to drool for. :)
ReplyDeleteLove your tall one´s smile. :D
I´m training my two year old niece who will pose for me more than her mom because "that´s what auntie does" {taking pics}. Nobody questions my camera-in-hand moments. :D
Welcome back - at least you managed to get a photo of the mermaid unencumbered by Japanese tourists! Did you visit the Tivoli Gardens? I've only spent 1 night in Copenhagen and that place still feels magical 30+ years later!
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to Sweden :o)
Glad you weren't disappointed in the mermaid...and that is my kind of shop too!!
ReplyDeleteAlison xx
