Short Happens

The Tall One hasn't always been tall. Many years ago he was very small.
"This baby is very small," said the midwives.
"This baby is too small," said the doctors.
"Stop!" said the wily old Consultant. "This is a small baby. But this is one smart, small baby. Look at his mum. She's not very big at all. Where's he supposed to grow? When he gets out he'll stretch his legs."
And he was right. The Tall One is smart. And he is tall. Taller even than The Accountant. Which I'm not. Obviously. He does try to empathise, though. When he happens upon me hemming a pair of jeans or balancing on a chair (because-it's-OK-I-can-get-it-myself); he likes to pat me on the head:
"Don't worry, Mum," he says kindly. "Short Happens!"

To Begin's The Thing

Oh, I love October. It might be even finer than September. It's all those new beginnings. New uniforms, new pencil cases, great fat exercise books begging to be filled and shiny fresh files snapping shut with a "funk". September is for starting out. October is for getting really stuck in. And that's what I plan to do. Just sneaking in before not-so-new November, Shimelles Blogging For Scrapbookers class has persuaded me to give this a go. And I've made a start right here. That deserves at least a Gold Star, I think.

I may not be ready to graduate yet. But I do have a page I made about my Mum's graduation. This is the girl who was the first in the family to go to university; the first in the street to own a car. And - against all the odds - tomorrow she will celebrate her 78th birthday. Have a good day, Mum.
